My spring just broke — can I still open the door by hand?
Please don't. The springs counterbalance the door's weight, so with one broken you're lifting the full 150 to 400 pounds by hand, and the door can slam down without warning. Don't use the opener either — pulling against a broken spring burns out the motor and can bend the tracks. Leave it closed, park outside, and call us. This is the repair we prioritize for same-day service.
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in cycles, not years — one cycle is a full open and close. A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles, which works out to roughly seven to ten years for an average family. Open and close the door four or more times a day and you'll get closer to five or six years. High-cycle springs rated for 20,000+ cycles cost a little more upfront and are worth it on a door you use constantly.
Should I replace one spring or both?
If your door has two springs, replace both. They were installed at the same time and have gone through identical wear, so when one breaks the other is typically weeks or months behind it. Replacing the pair costs meaningfully less than paying for two separate service calls, and it keeps the door balanced — a mismatched pair pulls unevenly and wears the opener and tracks prematurely.
Should I repair my opener or replace it?
If the unit is under about ten years old and the fault is a sensor, a gear, or a circuit board, repair is usually the better value. Past ten to twelve years, replacement generally makes more sense — parts get scarce, and older units lack the rolling-code security and auto-reverse safety features of current models. We'll tell you which side of that line you're on and won't push a new opener onto a unit that has years left.
How long does a typical repair take?
